Kent firm Brachers advises Japanese manufacturer on deal to expand UK/Europe operations via Ashford site.

Brachers LLP's corporate team has advised Maruwa, a Japanese ceramic and electronics component manufacturer on the acquisition of plant, machinery and intellectual property from Midlands-based Sarantel Limited, which will drive expansion at its Ashford European Headquarters.

Sarantel Limited has been a key manufacturer of antennae equipment for telecommunications devices since the late 1990s. PricewaterhouseCoopers were appointed as administrators to the company in June 2013.

Sean Gorman, a partner in the corporate team at Brachers says: "This acquisition is a significant step in Maruwa's ambitious plans to grow their operations in Europe. The additional plant and machinery will help them build on operations at their Ashford site, and demonstrates their commitment to invest in the Kent headquarters of their European operations".

The deal runs counter to the perceived trend that UK manufacturing is migrating overseas. Here a Japanese company is expanding its manufacturing base - and choosing Kent as the prime location to do this, underlining a key role for the region as a hub for UK/European expansion for overseas companies.

Gorman continued: "We are delighted to have had the opportunity to advise Ms Furukawa and her team in this acquisition which will help set up Maruwa for the next step of its strategic growth. The deal had a number of complexities and required significant negotiation, especially in relation to the intellectual property acquired. I'd like to congratulate the Maruwa team on their hard work in achieving a successful outcome."
