Katie Gillam is appointed President of the Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge and District Local Law Society

Katie Gillam, partner in our Private Services team, has been elected the President of the Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge and District Local Law Society. We are thrilled with her appointment and very proud to have another president amongst our midst. We asked Katie for her comments on attaining this role:
‘It is an honour to be appointed the President of the Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge and District Local Law Society. It is a role that has previously been held by both our Victoria Sampson and Jonathan Smithers and it is a great privilege to be following in their footsteps.

The Society represents local legal professionals and its aim is to encourage closer contact between its members, thereby strengthening the local legal community. We aim to address current issues that are important to the legal profession, and the Society is represented by a strong Council who is well known on a national level for ‘punching above its weight’. It responds to government consultations and also lobbies the Law Society of England and Wales, the Solicitors Regulation Authority and other

The Society encourages, and aims to provide opportunities for, our members to meet through social and training events. Our professional development lunches have proved very successful in the past and I will host these, with new and thought provoking topics, during my presidential year. I am aiming to organise a summer social event, but the highlight of any President’s year will be hosting and speaking at our annual dinner held at The Spa Hotel, Tunbridge Wells in November.

I shall encourage as many local law firms as possible to participate in the activities of the Society and I will, with the help of our newly appointed administrator, engage with the membership through email and social media. We are in the process of establishing a new Twitter account.

My appointment coincides with an exciting year for CooperBurnett LLP. Our Senior Partner Jonathan Smithers remains very much at the helm as President of the Law Society of England and Wales, representing, supporting and promoting over 130,000 solicitors nationally and internationally. Victoria Ansell continues in her post as the President of Kent Law Society until May. To have three representatives on a local, regional and national level is a real and, I believe, a unique honour for the firm. Victoria Sampson is the West Kent Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s President, so we have four presidents in total!

I am very much looking forward to the year ahead.’
