Equity capital markets remain muted

Global equity capital markets have had their slowest start to a year since 2005, even with a record share offering from Brazil’s national oil company Petrobras last week, which helped prop up third-quarter proceeds.

Global equity raisings raised $496bn so far this year, according to Thomson Reuters.

Without Petrobras’ $67bn issue, it would have been the third consecutive quarterly decline in issuance since the end of 2009.

With companies no longer needing rescue capital as at the depths of the financial crisis, but with the recovery still not strong enough to trigger much merger and acquisition activity, equity capital markets activity has been muted.
